Dear Parents,
In an effort to meet the needs of our Whiz Kids, I am changing the source that will be used for spelling words. I have attached a list that is comprised of 900 words which were selected using a detailed computer analysis of word frequency in the fourth grade. The sources scanned were textbooks including those published by Houghton Mifflin, Scholastic, and materials from Accelerated Reader. This list is known as the National Reading Vocabulary. My purpose for selecting this list is to address the challenges experienced when decoding and identifying phonetic sounds/blends. In addition, learning these words will increase fluency, accuracy, expand vocabulary as well as aid comprehension which are the goals that we address in the classroom daily. Overall, using this list will allow for an increased Lexile score and provide opportunities for the children to use the elements of phonetics to expand the skills that they currently have. If you wish to inquire further, TampaReads.com has a host of information.
Here is a breakdown of the words:
1st nine weeks-144 words (plus an additional 108 review words from grade 3)
2nd nine weeks-252 new words
3rd nine weeks-252 new words
4th nine weeks-252 new words
We will start at week 3 being that we did not start at the beginning of the school year. Starting at week 3 allows me to target some of the confusion that the children are experiencing with consonant rules. The phonetic focus for the weeks prior will reappear in the weeks ahead.
