Close reading has made a great impact on the ability of the Whizzizes to analyze and comprehend text. For that reason, we have decided to close read with sticky notes using our "Just Right Books" instead of completing book logs. While this may seem tedious and cumbersome in the beginning, the results far outweigh the struggles. The students are expected to close read by chapter. They have 3 colors of their choice. One color is for the main idea. Another color is for the summary. The remaining color is for writing the theme, unfamiliar words, key details, important information, something that has surprised them, questions they may have about the text and connections they have made with the text. While they should have three colors at the end of each chapter, they will not have an entry for every category with the third color. (See the Close Reading Parent Guide attached in Parent Resources and Reading Notes.)

Explicit and Implicit Meaning:
Explicit meaning is telling something directly. You don't have to think about or figure out what is being said.i
Implicit meaning requires you to determine the meaning using inferences. Those inferences may come from the text, pictures or the title.
INFERENCES are clues that allow the reader to determine the implied/implicit meaning. When one uses inferences they have INFERRED.
Example:
I don't like the baby. (Explicit: Remember the book Pecan Pie Baby.)
The Ding-Dang Baby is coming on the first snow fall. (Implicit: We can infer that Gia doesn't like the baby because she called the baby the Ding-Dang baby.)

Theme:
The theme of a literary text is the universal message/the lesson learned from the story. The theme does not include details from the story and should not be one word. When you determine the theme of the text, be sure to use text evidence to support the theme you have chosen.
Fables are great stories to learn theme. Here are two quick fable videos by Aesop:
