Thank you SOOOO much to my wonderful parents and teacher partner, Mrs. Enger Dickey, for the wonderful goodies I received during conference week. Ms. Suggs & Mrs. Espinosa, you are the BEST room moms ever!! Ms. McGinnis, my name is on display!! It was rough but we made it. We were able to conference with 47 out of 50 parents!! WHOOO HOOO!! That is awesome!! Our goal for the future is 100% attendance. We are extremely excited to serve you as parents and educate you precious babies! Remember, it takes our collective efforts to ensure that our children rise to their level of potential. Trust that our hard work will pay off and our children will be prepared to encounter all that life has to offer. Again, THANKS BUNCHES! :) We are now in the second phase of working on our Native American projects. (Take a peek at Work That Rocks!!) The children have completed the models, food and illustrations of the Native American tribes for study in their social studies class with Mrs. Dickey. They are now adding to that research via the computer and previous notes to gather further information to include in their informative writing, Yesss!! We are enjoying integrating the content to learn across the curriculum. As a culminating activity, in addition to their writing, the children will create a wax museum! We will have parents and many invited guests from the school come to visit the class and step back into time as they watch each Native American tribe come alive! This is an exhibit that should not be missed! Notice how we synergize to make the magic happen. Team work makes the dream work! We can't wait to see you! The dates for the wax museum will be announced soon. For the past two weeks we have been focusing on theme. As part of the 4th grade standards for reading, students are expected to be a able to determine the theme; universal message/lesson learned, from literary texts including poems and plays. Also, they must support their theme using text evidence. Take a peek at them in action! Close reading has made a great impact on the ability of the Whizzizes to analyze and comprehend text. For that reason, we have decided to close read with sticky notes using our "Just Right Books" instead of completing book logs. While this may seem tedious and cumbersome in the beginning, the results far outweigh the struggles. The students are expected to close read by chapter. They have 3 colors of their choice. One color is for the main idea. Another color is for the summary. The remaining color is for writing the theme, unfamiliar words, key details, important information, something that has surprised them, questions they may have about the text and connections they have made with the text. While they should have three colors at the end of each chapter, they will not have an entry for every category with the third color. (See the Close Reading Parent Guide attached in Parent Resources and Reading Notes.) Our children are charged with the extensive task of being able to critically evaluate and respond to literature/text. Therefore, reading in particular, is far more than having the ability to decode, read fluently and simply comprehend text. The expectation is that our children, as 4th graders, are able to read the text and form a universal opinion, use text evidence to support that opinion and prove their thoughts through that text evidence. These tasks require the ability to not only comprehend text, but synthesize and evaluate text which requires higher order thinking skills; the highest level of Bloom's Taxonomy. This means that having the ability to read the text is a small part of the equation. They must digest it, reconstruct it and create something new! Our children can and will do this! Stick with it! Parents, from time to time, have your child read aloud. This allows you to hear how they read and where they may be making mistakes. This also allows you to question them on the material they have read. Here are some questions that are great for them to answer: 1. How does the character feel?, How do you know? Show me evidence from the text. 2. What would you do if you were the character? Why? Have you ever been in the same situation? 3. Where does the story take place? How do you know? Use text evidence to prove your answers? 4.Tell me five facts you have learned from this book. (non-fiction) 5. How does this book compare to another book you have read. (Make sure the books are in the same genre.) Explain? 6. If you could change something about this book, what would you change? Explain using text evidence. 7. Can you relate to the characters? Which character do you relate to the most? Explain? Just in case: This parent letter was sent home in the Friday Folder

It is beginning to feel crisp and cool which lets us know that fall is in the air. To bring in the new season, Ms. Walker's homeroom will create a Fall memento to add to our Leader In Me class meeting lesson so we can get excited about the beauty that the fall brings! The craft part of our lesson will begin around 7:20. This is to allow us time for completion of the craft portion of a our lesson. Make sure you arrive at 7:15 am on Friday, October 31st. This is not a Halloween themed project so all students in Ms. Walker's homeroom can participate. Our class mom, Jessica Suggs will be present to conduct the project and assist with our Leader In Me lesson. Parents, we would love to have you join us so feel free to attend! I will send a class letter that will include a return slip. That slip will have a box to check if you wish to attend or if you are unable to attend. We can't wait!! I hope to see you there! Ms. W Head Whiz Reminder:
The narrative project is due this Friday, October 10, 2014. This is an opportunity to provide an extra writing grade and offers an extension to our narrative writing. The criteria was sent home in the Friday folders. It is also available under the Projects tab. Remember, writings are 70% of the language arts grade as mandated by Cobb County School District. Use the notes written in your journal. I have provided extensive feedback. Happy writing/typing Whizzies! You are young authors, you can do it. |
